German TV Documentary

This afternoon we filmed an interview with a German television crew. The programme is mainly about the differences between the Lutheran Church in Germany and the Church of England. They interviewed Sarah about being queer in the Church of England. They recordedSarah playing the tunes from 'Intro Song' and singing 'Shine For Him'.

We're thinking that they'll show about 2 minutes Sarah in the 45 minute documentary! However, they liked the music so they might show more or use some as a soundtrack. Details are sketchy but it's set for transmission at the beginning of September.

Filming

I spent yesterday afternoon filming an interview for a DVD on Diversity on Herefordshire. The project is funded by the Equality and Human Rights Commission. They are making a number of short films covering issues to do with Age, Gender, Disability, Race, Faith, Sexual Orientation and Gender Changes. The DVD will be shown as part of Herefordshire's 2010 Borderlines Film Festival and in diversity sessions afterwards.

It was good to do and I enjoyed working with Mike who shot the interview and with Jan the producer at Rural Media.

Sheffield

I had a great time in Sheffield last night with a group from the Student Christian Movement and the LGBT Society. Fab night. Great company. We talked about sex, gender, changes and outings! Thanks folks x

Google

We are back on the front page of Google! When we changed our website address we lost our position on the first page of Google. Now after several months we are back on the first page. As Sarah Jones is quite a common name(!) we're delighted to be back in the top listings.

Hustings

Sarah chaired the election Hustings in Ross on Wye on 23rd April at John Kyrle High School. Four out of the five candidates who are standing for election attended and were warmly received by a large gathering of voters. Afterwards BBC TV came back to Sarah's home to interview some of the audience members in a live broadcast.

Happy Christmas

Sarah, Gin, Sal and Duncan would like to wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas and a blessed 2010.

Tour Photo\'s

The photo's from our Billy No-Mates Autumn 2009 Tour are now on the website. We are going to post a full tour report soon. We had a super time - thank you Hull for 5 shows; and thank you Leeds, Skipton and Redditch!

Holy Trinity Cleeve

We played Holy Trinity, Cleeve last night. Wow! What a church - beautiful in all sorts of ways. . . and gentle too. Many of the audience were not too sure what to expect - few of them are folkies or especially into singer songwriters. However we had a great time and the audience really seemed to enjoy it.

This was a 'Folk and Faith' show and so it was a good opportunity to sing 'Shine For Him' which we were particularly pleased with - despite forgetting a couple of words to the last verse! Cathy and Francis looked after us splendidly. Here's to more nights like this one.

The first two nights of the Billy No-Mates Tour have gone very well indeed and we have sold more CDs per show than we have for many a year. Horrah! We now head to the North East.

Opening Night

We played The Pump House in Watford last night on the opening night of the Billy No-Mates Tour. It was fantastic to be joined by Duncan Gibbs for the evening. . . and nicely perverse that the opening night of a solo tour should be in duo format! The Pump House is a neat venue and a lovely club. It was very good to catch up with our old friend Hamish Currie. Thanks to everyone there for a terrific night in this friendly club.

Radio Shropshire

I was a guest on Genevieve Tudor's folk programme last night. It was super to see Genevieve and Alan again - it's been too long! Genevieve and Alan were as lovely as they always are and we had some time to catch up on news and life between songs. I played live - Revolution Road, Lucy George/Katy's Goose and One Step Forward.

Going Green

Our website has gone green!
SCM Annual Conference

Sarah was a keynote speaker at the Student Christian Movement Annual Conference on 21st February. She delivered a talk entitled 'Gender, God, You and Me' to a very well attended conference at the Pioneer Centre in Shropshire. "It was great fun - a bit like a spiritual homecoming" she said afterwards so we can be sure she enjoyed it. The talk featured a graph with a resolution and a reality which Microsoft could only dream about! Thank you SCM for being a lovely bunch of people and for being an important organisation. We'd like to keep in contact with the local groups and who knows - we'd love to see some of you on our autumn 2009 tour!

BBC Radio Programme

Sarah has been interviewed for a BBC Radio 4 programme about having the name Sarah. This was inspired by 'The Sarah Party' which aimed to get a vast load of people called Sarah together at a party in London. Our Sarah was asked about how she came to have the name and what it meant for her. The Beeb said that they'd tell us when it was broadcast - but they didn't . . . so we missed it! We found out that it had been broadcast when we went to the theatre to see Fascinating Aida and the FA girls said that they heard the programme that day. . . so we caught up with it on the BBC's Listen Again facility. And Fascinating Aida were super, of course!

Sarah spent Tuesday 13th January filming with the BBC for a programme provisionally entitled 'The Truth about Working Women' - a two part documentary on women in the workplace. It will look at gender roles and equality and will be presented by Sophie Rayworth from BBC News and also by Justin Rowlett from 'The One Show' and 'Newsnight'. The interview with Sarah will just be a short peice of the finished programme but expect it to cover issues such as women in the church and of course, gender identity. At the moment it is scheduled for broadcast this coming Spring. Stay tuned!

Sarah at Greenbelt Festival 2008

Sarah appeared at Greenbelt on Friday 22nd August as part of their Outerspace programme. She was part of a panel who told their stories of being 'out' in Christian churches - and how they have managed to stay in their churches. . . or not as the case may be.

Sarah last appeared at the wonderful Greenbelt Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse in 2006 when she talked about her life, gender, gender changes and God to a packed house. The 200 seat venue was full well before the start time and a few extra seats were hastily arranged for some more folks to come in for the session. 'I was very nervous when I saw everyone there' said Sarah as this was the first time she had talked on this subject to a group that size. 'It was a strange feeling because obviously we've played to much bigger houses before - but I think it was just the fact that I was talking about my life rather than singing about aspects of it!'

The Greenbelt website is at www.greenbelt.org.uk

Who's who?

Over the years Duncan Gibbs has been Sarah's closest collaborator. There is no doubt that he is an essential part of this outfit, playing keyboards, bass guitar, Appalachian dulcimer, at gigs and engineering and co-producing the albums Freedom and First Person Plural. There's an interview with Duncan on the web site - and a nice photo too of the man if you don't mind us saying so, if you click this link.

There are also one or two other key folks whom you can read about in the section devoted to other members of the team. See a photo of Sal before you see her at a gig and find out some of Gin's favourite phrases.
